Zion United Church
Sandy Cove
Registered 1993 Sandy Cove Zion United Church Circa 1856
In 1850, Sandy Cove received their first resident methodist clergyman in the person of Rev. James Taylor, followed by Rev. Chesley and Rev. G.W . Tuttle. These ministers promoted the building of a church in Sandy Cove. In 1856 the church was built on land provided by Capt. John Eldridge in 1852. The minister lived in Sandy Cove and held services also in Centreville and Broad Cove (Culloden). A pulpit bible which is still in the church reads:
Presented to M.E. Society Sandy Cove, by Captain Joseph W. Bates, East Boston, May 27th, 1856.
The beautiful stained glass window which was brought over from England reads:
"Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God" "Alleleuia".
This is a lovely feature of the Zion United Church. The original communion goblets are still used. The bell was added in 1863 and it came from Henry N. Hooper and Company Boston. The windows are new but they had a specialist replace the old windows with identical new windows. Some of the original trustees to the church were Joseph Carty, John Merritt, George Colin Crowell, George Henderson, Tilos? Carty, Harvey Eldridge, and James Taylor (superintendent minister).
